Short English Lesson

Paradox:

Ravish Verb To violate or rape
"The soldiers ravished the entire city before they left"
Ravishing Adjective Looking particilarly stunning and attractive
"You look ravishing"

Beacon- a guiding or warning signal, as a light or fire, especially one inan elevated position.
"He saw the beacon from a long distance"

Impish- Annoyingly playful
"Sge gave him an impish smile before she left"

Buoyant- tending to float on a liquid or rise in air or gas
or characterized by liveliness and light-heartedness
"The woman suddenly appeared buoyant"

Razzmatazz- Vivid, showy and noisy fuss or activity
"He made the party a real razzmatazz

Livid- Imparting a deathlike glow or being furiously angry
"He was livid with the twins"

Pertain- Relating or refererring to something, belonging to, being a part of
"The documents pertaining to the case"
(The noun is Pertainym, "The documents are pertainyms to the case" )

Esoteric- confined to and understandable by only an enlightened inner circle
"The texts were esoteric"

Iridescent- Having a play of lustrous rainbowlike colors
"The bubble looked iridescent when the sunrays hit it"

Certitude- total certainty or greater certainty that circumstances warrant
"His certitude was unnerving"

Cadence -The total number of steps per minute
"An elite long-distance runner often has a candence of 90-95 and it doesn't vary much with speed"

Elegy- A mournful poem
"She wrote a couple of elegies when her mother died"

Paradigm- systematic arrangement of all the inflected forms of a word, or the generally accepted perspective
of a particular discipline at a given time.
"The belief that our planet is an orb is a paradigm"

Tangential- Being slightly connected/merely touching something, or acting along or in the direction of a tangent
"I tried to discuss my salary, but the boss kept veering off into tangential topics."

Asymptote-a straight line approached by a given curve as one of the variables in
the equation of the curve approaches infinity,from Gk. asymptotos "not falling together,"
from a- "not" +syn "with" + ptotos "fallen,"

Coalesce- To fuse or cause to grow together
"We coalesced the different molten metals into a different material"

Evanesce- Disappearing gradually,for example emotions
"As they got different interests, the love began to evanesce"

Soliloquy- a (usually long) dramatic speech intended to give the illusion of unspoken reflections, or
a speech you make to yourself
"The man was deeply emerged in a mental soliloquy"

Para- A prefix appearing in words of greek origin, commonly attached to verbs. Meaning:
at
*to one side of
*beside
*side by side
*beyond
*past

For instance "Paragraph", "paranormal", "parallell"
